This hack does not apply to the 3G iPhone…
This is a bit off topic, but I thought this might help save a few people some headaches…
I love my Bose QuietComfort 2 headphones.
These are great for traveling and yard work as they cancel most background noise. In combination with an iPod, we’re talking hours of entertainment while working.
I’m not a big fan of cell phones (my current one is almost 4 years old and doesn’t work very well anymore), but with a new child, my wife actually thought an iPhone would be ideal (Did I mention I LOVE my wife?!). I frequently “forgot” to carry my cell phone, but I always had my iPod. I also used a Palm Tungsten E2 to keep track of contacts, dates, notes, etc. and it was getting very old and didn’t take a charge well anymore. So the iPhone seemed like an ideal replacement. But there was a HUGE problem. If you haven’t heard, iPhones don’t take regular headphones very well. There’s a recessed headphone jack in which only iPod headphones will fit! Now you can purchase an “adaptor” from Belkin or other manufacturers, but if you’re like me, you don’t want an adaptor- they’re UGLY! So I have a free “hack” you may like…
Warning: DO NOT TRY THIS UNLESS YOU CAN LIVE WITHOUT YOUR BOSE HEADPHONES! IF YOU DO AND RUIN YOUR HEADPHONES, DON’T SAY I DIDN’T WARN YOU!
The Bose headphone jack WILL fit, but the rubber surrounding the metal jack is in the way. The rubber/plastic is really soft, so just make a soft incision to “carve” a small portion of the rubber/plastic off with a small knife or other sharp object. This took me about 30 seconds and now it fits snugly with a tight “snap” and sounds spectacular. I was nervous that I would ruin my headphones, but alas, there was metal beneath. Pictures below…

1. Carve the rubber/plastic

2. Before the carve, it won’t fit

3. After the hack, it goes right in with a healthy “snap”
And while you’re here, why not get some music lessons?
